  • 1.  Authoritative vs. reliable

    Posted 08-30-2024 12:06

    Hi guys,

In a deposition, I was asked if the standards of practice for life care planners was authoritative. I have always heard that there are very few authoritative documents... that it is safer to say a document is reliable.

But as I have looked up the definition of authoritative and considered it, I am rethinking my answer.

What do you guys think? Are our Standards of Practice authoritative?

    Thanks for your input,

    Amy

To the extent that any of the original definition from the Latin still applies (auctoritatem - it may only be done with official approval), I disagree.  To the extent that only the more modern definition applies (trusted and relied on to usually be accurate), I agree.

I would say they are authoritative, as the practice standards are derived from a review and discussion on a regular basis by IALCP life care planners at the IALCP Summits held periodically to address any changes that may be indicated with the passage of time and development of the Life Care Planning industry... so they are peer reviewed, and derived from best practices amongst our members. I'm curious to see what others think too.
