    Good evening all

We are running into an issue with some vendors....and I wondered if this is occurring in other areas (and how you are handling it).  Perhaps it is a reflection of the economy?

When asking for prices, some vendors are giving the charge they normally bill to insurance and then, seem to always add a BUT, if "you pay cash the day of the test, it is $ __________".  There is a real difference of numbers here, sometimes as little as half the original cost or even less.  I've routinely asked for clarification... one hospital charge clerk indicated today that  "if a patient has no insurance, the price is still the lower one, however they are asked to pay what they can and then are put on a payment plan"

I don't use negotiated fees in my LCPs.....and, in the past, have considered the reduced "cash" price in this vein.

Perhaps a range (cash to insurance cost) is more appropriate?  I would appreciate thoughts from the group.

    Thanks much

    Ann Neulicht

I am finding this true as well Ann but continue to use the full rate, not the reduced one. Angie Angela M. I do not use negotiated rates, such as contracts for insurers. However, if a provider/facility has a separate rate for cash-pay/private-pay, I will use that and I don't consider it a "negotiated" rate. I ask what a person without insurance would pay.
