Hi Karen
We on the IALCP Board worked very hard to get the prices down as far as we could with Fair Health. One thing I did to help myself save money is to start a data base, so once I look up a code in a certain zip code, I will keep that search in my data base for a year. Then if I have the same code in the same geo area again within that year, I can go back to my data base and not have to use up another search for something I had already looked up in the past. It is a little more time consuming at first, but will save me time and money on future cost research down the road. Fair Health updates their info quarterly, but I think the standard of practice would find having info with a one year period very acceptable, as prices do not move much, if at all, in 12 months.
Katherine is also correct, that Fair Health has heard the concerns that the smaller practitioners have about the cost being more expensive for less volume and they are working on helping our members develop a way to share the tool amongst solo life care planners so that you can order a larger number of searches and share them. Certainly for your company, RNS, you would but one package to be shared amongst all of your employees.
We [the board] just spoke with Fair Health today and they are working with certain members who are making this request to develop a plan in this regard that will work for everyone involved. So by taking the informational classes being offered, you can speak directly with Jeff at Fair Health and give him your suggestions or requests, which he will take into consideration, as he problem solves these issues to make this program work for the majority.
I personally have been using the site for two weeks and am finding it very useful and worth the fee per search. You can get more information all in one place, including the standard CPT and DRG info we all are used to; but also we have access to the more complex costs such as HCPCS codes for supplies, in-pt meds; ambulance transportation, etc and anesthesia costs! Also the CPT modifiers are in there, so you can, for example, get the cost of the facility fee and the radiology read fee for every diagnostic study all in one search.
Email or call me if you have any further questions, but I do suggest participating in one of the classes next week to get your specific questions answered.
