  • 1.  Canadian Payment Information

    Posted 02-19-2016 10:14

This is for my Canadian Colleagues.

I am working on a Life Care Plan of a Canadian Citizen and I have a few questions I need answers.

1.) Does the Government pay for home attendant care?

2.) Does the Government pay for Assisted Living Facilities?

My client has a brain injury and will soon not be able to live on her own.  Does anyone know the general costs of attendant care in the Waterloo or Toronto area?  Also the costs of CNA's?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Geralyn,

Healthcare in Canada is managed by the provinces and varies by province. Here is the department in charge of assessing and adjudicating on home health, assisted living and long term care in the province of Ontario:

Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
    http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/
    1-866-532-3161

    HOMECARE:

Here is their link to home care Q and A (what type, what services, who pays, etc.):
    http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/common/system/default.aspx#4
In that link they mention that one must apply to their local Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) to see if and how much the gov't will pay.  I imagine that it is income based (like my own province, New Brunswick) and that they would only fund up to a certain point (ie 10hrs a day or such). My province denies or cuts off applicants once they reach a certain level of care because they deem it "unsafe" to remain in the home (but most likely it's because of cost) and so will recommend nursing home care.
Here is a link to a CCAC FAQ page:
    http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/contact/ccac/ccac_facts.aspx

    ASSISTED LIVING:

Looks like Ontario may call assisted living facilities (partial care) "Retirement Homes" and nursing homes (24hr care) "Long-Term Care Homes." Here is the link for retirment home info, cost, how to apply, etc.
    https://www.ontario.ca/page/find-retirement-home?_ga=1.247153796.1861967104.1455977608

Once again, I do not live in Ontario but my province has similar programs with similar criteria for application. I'm only posting this info in case you don't get a reply to this post from an Ontarionian...if that's what they call themselves.

    Good luck!
