    Hello to my good friends:

    I am looking for a source (s) to document additional days a person with a TBI will spend in the hospital on an annual basis over the healthy population.  Is the time affected if the patient is a four year old child?  What about a source(s) for the average cost of a day in the hospital?  Absolutely any thoughts or any direction would be appreciated.

    Hi Bob,

    Cost of a hospital stay can very greatly from region to region and even from hospital to hospital in the same town. There are numerous studies and articles out there showing average cost of stay in a hospital. The severity of the brain injury will determine length of stay and that can vary great deal by what is available in the community. Once the person is past acute care and then the in-patient rehab care, there isn't normally alot of hospital stay due to the brain injury.

    You need to consult with their physicians.  Depending on the severity of the brain injury, there very well be complications that are probable.  If the physician determines that certain complications are probable, you can price each one and the frequency of each one over a lifetime.  HCUP.net may help with some of these more common complications.  If they can only tell you that they are possible, I do not price them.
