Brian Kurt Preston

Born in San Angelo Texas to Max Preston and Norma Wren Preston, Brian
graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a BS in Psychology and MS in
Rehabilitation Counseling. Brian dedicated his career to the rehabilitation
of survivors of traumatic brain injury. Brian began his career with NC
Vocational Rehabilitation and Learning Services to provide assessment and
coordination of vocational services for individuals with compromised
physical and cognitive function secondary to catastrophic injury. He founded
Preston Rehabilitation Consulting where he worked with forensic vocational
evaluation. He consulted with the Dept of Social Security in the Office of
Hearing and Appeals to evaluate vocational capacity and also served as an
adjunct professor for UNC Chapel Hill in the Dept of Rehabilitation
Psychology. Brian ultimately returned to Learning Services to serve as the
Executive Regional Director overseeing clinical services for the facilities
in Durham, Raleigh and Creedmore. He was recently appointed to the
Governor's Advisory Counsel on Brain Injury.
Brian was an accomplished musician, his specializing on the 6-string
electric bass guitar. He wrote and produced multiple albums through the
combined efforts of several bands over the past 30 years. He played under an
array of genres, however he particularly enjoyed improv jazz fusion. As an
ever seeker of truth, he studied philosophy and embraced the Humanist
tradition. He enjoyed the fine arts and was an accomplished photographer.
Brian was a devoted father and spent time with his children telling stories,
hiking, camping, fishing, but sharing overarchingly his passion for music
and art.
Brian is preceded in death by his mother Norma Wren Preston. He is survived
by his father, Max Preston and three children; Benjamin James, Abigail
Christine and Deirdre Kathleen and their mother, Catherine McMullen; as well
as his brother, Grant Preston and devoted girlfriend, E. Mia Johnson.
A celebration of Brian's life will be held at the Eno River Unitarian
Universalist Fellowship 4907 Garrett Road, Durham, NC 27707 on Sat. August
4, 2012 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow the service at his father's home
- the Ashe House - 144 N. Wake St., Hillsborough, NC 27278. A private family
gathering for the Internment will be held at St. Mathews Church in
Hillsborough at his mother's grave site.

The family would like to express a profound appreciation for the loyalty of
Brian's many friends and co-workers throughout his illness and for their
devoted support during this difficult time.
