I've been approached many times by Rehab Counseling students asking if they might do a practicum or internship with me. I have usually told them the experience would not meet the University's requirements because there is not enough counseling involved in what I do on a daily basis. Well, the University is now considering offering to allow students to split time during an internship or practicum, so they can get their 1-to-1 time with clients in one setting and then also be exposed to private rehab things, such as life care planning and voc expert work, in another setting.
SO, my question to you all is this - Have any of you in small practices ever had a student? If you have, what sort of duties do you allow them to perform? I recognize there are numerous factors that might limit the student's experience, but would like to be open minded about the idea if I can.
Thoughts appreciated,
PattyC
