It is a complex situation. If we are honest as VEs we likely all have had the same thoughts and feelings in hearings. If it were not for the age rules rigidly and blankedly and kind of artificially being applied we would have no problem placing old Sally or Joe in all sorts of occupations. We also know, from having so many Sallys and Joes over so many decades that they would also probably say "no, I don't want that job, I used to earn $X and won't work for a dime less". Or that another occupation, though in line with physical limitations, aptitudes, interest codes is "icky" or "boring" or has no benefits (and "since my wife makes great money and has great benefits and our house is paid off, I won't settle for anything less than $X and maybe don't even need to work" . Anyone who does job placement also knows employers say they would like more older workers to apply since they stay longer and tend to have "better work ethic". BLS Tenure data bear that out.

All of that plus employers are having a TERRIBLE experience with Gen Z, really fascinating and scary! :

On top of that, there are too many college graduates. A huge percentage of college graduates work in occupations not requiring a degree, are/get angry about their situation/leave and employers are sick of them. Getting in the weeds a bit tangential, but would that not logically enhance opportunity for older workers with established work histories/ethics. So notwithstanding being a bit of a social worky bleeding heart (or at least a moderate old D, who abhors the blatant sociopathy and lack empathy of the Project 2025ers) there is a lot to think about here if we want to be fair and realistic. And since so many VEs made what is in my view a silly business decision to put all eggs in one basket, I am never so sure that all of us want to be fair and realistic.
Plus, as it relates to DOT it is ridiculous that if the government did not want to update it, and that we had 30+ years and thousands of VEs, CRCs, job developers to divvy the chore up that we did essentially nothing to do it ourselves as we, not the government, are the experts.
