Removing Barriers to Work

All, I am cross posting this to SSVE and Forensic sections.

There have been some potential changes afoot and some interest in revamping some of the policies surrounding work for people with disabilities. I assume most are familiar with Ticket to Work. Ticket to Work, while it costs the government very little to maintain (payments come from unpaid benefits), has not been hugely successful in getting large numbers of people back to work, less than 1% of individuals leave the adult disability rolls per year.

There was a hearing scheduled in July for the House Ways and Means subcommittees but was postponed when the House recessed. We believe it may be rescheduled in September, after the August recess.  Below is that announcement:

POSTPONED: Chairman Smith, Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Estes, and Work & Welfare Subcommittee Chairman LaHood Announce Joint Subcommittee Hearing on Untapped Talent in America: Removing Barriers to Work and Supporting Opportunity for Individuals with Disabilities

House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08), Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Ron Estes (KS-04), and Work & Welfare Subcommittee Chairman Darin LaHood (IL-16) have postponed the joint Subcommittees on Social Security and Work & Welfare hearing to discuss barriers to work and how policymakers can support opportunities for individuals with disabilities to establish, renew, or strengthen their connection to the workforce scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM in 1100 Longworth House Office Building.

Warshawsky at the American Enterprise Institute published this article regarding his suggestions for simplifying the return to work. I have linked to this article below. There are some interesting ideas in this article.

I suspect there will be some movement towards revamping policies surrounding work and Social Security Disability. I intend to ensure IARP has a voice in this process if it does come to fruition.
