  • 1.  Presentation to rehabilitation counseling students

    Posted 10-08-2023 18:42

I have been asked to do a 1 hour presentation to a class of Rehab Counseling students (Masters in Rehab Counseling).  I am not being compensated.  I have been concerned for a number of years that few people are considering a career in the private sector.  Therefore, I see this as an opportunity.

I have one hour to present info that will entice the students to consider a career outside of the voc rehab state agency, alcohol/drug, and local/regional disability agencies.  Those are all essential functions.  The local rehab counseling program is really directed, in my opinion, towards feeding the public sector with candidates.

Can someone please point me to the salary survey that was published by IARP a few years ago.  I think that contains some useful info for my presentation.

I am also interested in hearing from other people who have done similar presentations.  Specifically, how did you lay it out to make it intriguing to someone getting in the field for the first time?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Glen,
    I can probably help out.

O*net median salary for Rehabilitation Counselor: $39,990

(I won't leave a link because I assume most can find it.  This number is likely skewed due to a sample represented by non-private or less qualified people.)

    CRCC survey mean salary: $73,851

80ish% of the participants of this survey were state-employed workers, so the mean is a little misleading across the field.  Many people make much less but a small group makes considerably more.  The breakdown of survey participants is interesting though.

IARP member salary survey mean earnings: $168,694 for men and $107,728 for women.

Also, I don't mean to be solicious, but I just finished writing a book about finding careers in private rehabilitation counseling for the very reason that you describe.  If you wish to refer students to this link, they might find some value in a short video reviewing the many occupational titles that people hold in private rehabilitation counseling.  Each section of the book covers not only salaries, but also how to get into the field, who would be most appropriate for the kind of work, and what a day-in-the-life of that work might look like (in the book but not the video).  It's the book I wish I would have had when I was in school to help me understand my options for getting into the field.  https://aaronmertes.com/book_page/  If you happen to be at the DC conference, I can show it to you there so you can have some more things to talk about with those students.

It's also worth mentioning that state voc rehab is good work, it's just not good for everyone.  People should not necessarily be funnelled into certain areas, but understand and learn about their options to make more informed choices.  We wouldn't do that with our clients (hopefully), but unfortunately it happens to all too many students.   Hopefully this helps, Glen.

    Glen:

How wonderful to be asked to speak to students. It will help students learn the options and will be key to someone finding their perfect match in their career. There are so many options, just look no further than our diverse IARP Sections,  LCP, Forensic, VRTS, RDCM, and SSVE. Aaron's book is a great introduction to the field.

Aaron is right, private rehabilitation is not for everyone, just as forensics is not for everyone. Knowing the options will help students make the best decisions that match them.  It can give them goals or options for the future should they tire of a certain area of rehabilitation, or once they gain experience.

There is a course online on the IARP webinar series from Anthony Morin in 2020 that may be helpful.    This link should take you to the free webinar "Careers in Private Sector Rehabilitation."

There are many webinars that are saved on the education/learn tab on the IARP website. You might review to see if there are others that might help.

While you are meeting with the students, you might encourage them to join IARP. There is a $15 student membership fee.  The link to more information, student member benefits, and how to apply is found below.

I joined IARP as a student member in 1991 It was one the best decisions I made for my career.

I have spoken with students at universities in the past,  I hope that more members will try to connect with a professor and do so.

    Good luck!

    Best regards,

    Hi Mr. Adams,

The Emerging Professionals section developed a presentation regarding the benefits of joining IARP, and it was emailed to CACREP-accredited graduate programs nationwide. It is attached to this thread.

We hope this is helpful, and we are happy to assist.

Thank you, and have a great week ahead.

Glen, I did such a presentation many years ago to the NJ Chap of NRA when I was President.  I covered all the various areas of practice we and our colleagues do in the private sector, which is quite varied, and many were interested.

With that said, I think Aaron has the most up-to-date info on such a presentation and he will be your best resource.

Wonderful that you have been asked to do this.

FYI - I also made a pitch for IARP and our free student membership and mentorship program. I think this is also valuable to let them know there are resources and friendly faces through IARP members who would be happy to speak with them.  Also mention the Young Professionals group in IARP.

    Hope this helps.
