Hi all....I have a client who is a native Mandarin Chinese speaker.  She's been in this country for 3 years.  I just interviewed her last week through an interpreter.  I feel like I need to be able to assess her facility with English but am not sure how to go about this.  I have asked to speak with her supervisor to see how much they had to demonstrate tasks, could she read instructions (she does us Google translate), etc.

I'm sure I am not the only one to have come across this - am wondering if some of you that have more experience in this can guide me?  Is there a quick assessment that can give me an idea of language usage???

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Katherine

    Hi Katherine,

I don't have a great answer for you, but often colleges assess for language proficiency, especially English as a Second Language (ESL) during the admissions and advising process to see if students are likely to be successful in English and math classes.  It might be possible to reach out to them to see what they use or whether she would be able to do an assessment through a local college, even community colleges will most likely have these kinds of things.
