Hi all:
John Berg reached out to let me know about a fundraiser for his son Thomas. We wanted to share it so that his rehabiliation collegues can be aware of the situation and help support John and his family. Many of you know John as a prior Forensic Section Chair, speaker and actiive IARP member. Please consider a donation.
The below information is from John.
Thomas Berg who was spinal cord injured in Mexico on 3/11/2023. The home had no insurance. There is no litigation or funding to be expected.<u5:p></u5:p>

I remain in San Diego on 04/19/2023. 5+ weeks in an apartment with my other son from WA State. My injured son, Thomas Berg, age 34, sustained a C3, C4, C5 and T-2 spinal cord fractures and S/P 10-hour fusion from C2-T3. It is that serious. He had CPR twice as his heart did stop.<u5:p></u5:p>
<u5:p></u5:p>
Thomas has just been transferred from SCSD-Hillcrest Hospital while enduring an intubation for 21 days, now trac since. He has tube feeding and looks like a POW. His function is shrugging with traps, movement of forearms with biceps bilaterally and no fingering or leg function. Complete Quad diagnosis. He is on a vent weening program at a secondary hospital with unknown prognosis when he can transfer to University of Washington, Seattle SCI inpatient. That's the plan.<u5:p></u5:p>
<u5:p></u5:p>
The insurance he had was "basic". You know the costs are extraordinary. Chris Reeve Foundation states a 20 year old is 4.7 million, a 50 year old is 2.7 million. I have already spent/obligated personally over $50k already in 5-week of out of pocket expenses. I need some assistance from my peers and contacts.<u5:p></u5:p>

I am engaging HopeHelpLive.org. They are a firm like Go Fund Me but it is a 501 © (3) corp. allowing tax write offs for individuals and corporations of any sort like S-Chapter, LLC or C-Corp. It is from P.A. started by a physician. Good Fund Me contributions do not offer tax benefits for those generous contributors. Also, $ does not interfere with eligibility limits for SSI or medicaid services. HopeHelpLive.org, act like an ESCROW entity, all funds distributed only from physician recommendations on needs and money never touches any one even with power of attorney (me). They pay vendors directly for a 3% fee total. Checks, credit cards, even securities if held one year or more are acceptable.

If you know of any other contacts, please let me know. I have a bio developed and some pictures and videos on Thomas now and are posted on the forthcoming Campaign website. This is the biggest challenge of not only Thomas but the entire trauma of the Berg family, John, Betty, Evan and daughter, Alison.<u5:p></u5:p>
