I am wanting to get some collective opinions on how reasonable it is to use Glassdoor to determine earning potential.  I am seeing this more and more and it appears to me that Glassdoor gets their info from self reported employees of companies which may not always be correct.  What are others experience with Glassdoor.  I appreciate any thoughts.

I think it is fine to include such sources but with a caveat. The VE should also review and include state employment LMIS, OEWS data, job openings listings posted by the state and, depending upon the case, published data from professional associations/proprietary source surveys, and LMS. To use that corny, hackneyed college boy/girl term, you "triangulate"

OEWS wages are often very helpful. More helpful yet are localized State and MSA wages. GlassDoor does have a lot of employee-posted material, which can vary widely. Note that reporting of OEWS wages are capped at a maximum of $208,000 per year maximum, so this may not be the best source for vey high wage earners. Also, the OEWS program does not report on Self Employed workers.

More helpful is OEWS wage data reported at the NAICS industry level. This is found here for National Data: https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oessrci.htm

Better yet are State Level versions of this, but these are only available as OEWS Research Estimates by State and Industry and do have some caveats: https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_research_estimates.htm
These can be downloaded as an XLSx (spreadheet).

We have been following these Research Estimates for the last few years and have decided to incorporate this data in our Special "Labor Market Analysis Report" which is included in our Job Browser Pro Web and OASYS Web software. This report calculates the geographic radius around a street address, identifies the counties within the XX mile radius you specify (usually the number of miles a worker might be reasonably expected to commute to work for Workers Compensation purposes). Using county data for employment by relevant NAICS from County Business Patterns (CBP), we prepare a NAICS x NAICS breakout of the employment in these counties (reported in the CBP data) following our DOT Industry Context method. There is a final summation at the bottom of a very comprehensive report (county by county). The report does sweep across State boundaries, preparing a separate report for each adjacent state. There is also a map showing the search radius and counties covered. The report does not include data from local, state or federal governments since these do not participate in the CBP program.

If you are a current subscriber to our Job Browser Pro Web or OASYS Web, click the button "Labor Market Analysis Report" located at the bottom of the Labor Market Information > DOT Estimate tab for a specific DOT occupation. This will generate the report based on your input and the NAICS industries for which data is available by the selected DOT occupation.

For anyone interested in what such a report looks like, please email me and I will prepare a customized sample report for you.

Glassdoor lists they get data from current and former employees, including inflation trends, at similar geographic locations, and updated monthly. I use it as "part" of my work, not always but agree with colleague S. Stipe, it's a piece of data you then triangulate (a sailor's term from navigation) to other sources as Stipe lists. Nothing is a perfect source that can be impeached or attempted.

I agree with John and Scott.  I just it as one source; I look carefully at the wage data and number of people who gave data, and use my clinical judgement whether I use it or not...but again, not as only source.

John you're so dang maritime. I just hate to use language most people don't understand. Language can be a way to distance oneself from others. If you routinely listen to talking heads on cable news (not Fox or Newsmax which seems to be at 5th grade level) or read many op-eds I think, I'm pretty well educated and intelligent but need to often access the dictionary. I once employed a counselor who used words like obsequious, prescient and other fancy fussy talk. I told him to speak English. I'll always recall an attorney at SSA examining his client, some dude with a GED a question that began "Now subsequent to but not withstanding...." Deer in headlights. Now if we could just come up with an alternative for our "Vocational Expert" term
    Have a fun holiday all!

I do not feel that there is anything objectively verifiable in terms of this data. It is all completely subjectively based and do not feel that it would be appropriate to utilize.
