I need a DOT code for a NDT Inspector.

I've searched under quality control, testing, inspector, etc. and cannot find anything that comes close.  Any ideas?

    Hi Barbara,

In my experience, NDT deals with x-rays and sonographs but in an industrial setting.

I've used: Title: Radiographer (AKA X-Ray Technician) DOT Code: 199.361-010 SVP 5 and Light.

Radiographs metal, plastics, concrete, or other materials, such as castings, sample parts, pipes, and structural members for flaws, cracks, or presence of foreign materials, utilizing knowledge of radiography equipment, techniques, and procedures:

I adjust the exertion based upon the evaluee report, but find in the oil field it is often performed at heavy.

    I hope this is helpful.

    011.261-018 NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTER

ALTERNATE JOB TITLES (Might also be known as):

AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE NON-DESTRUCTIVE INSPECTOR; AIRCRAFT NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING SUPERVISOR; AVIATION MISCELLANEOUS CODES-NONDESTRUCT; JOURNEYMAN NDT INSPECTOR; NON-NUCLEAR NDT EXAMINER; VT MT AND PT NDT INSPECTOR; VT MT PT AND RT NDT INSPECTOR; VT MT PT AND UT INSPECTOR; NUCLEAR NDT EXAMINER; NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTER

Conducts radiographic, penetrant, ultrasonic, and magnetic particle tests on metal parts to determine if parts meet nondestructive specifications: Reviews test orders to determine type of test requested, test procedures to follow, and part acceptability criteria. Applies agents, such as cleaners, penetrants, and developers, and couplant (light oil which acts as medium), to parts, or heats parts in oven, to prepare parts for testing. Determines test equipment settings according to type of metal, thickness, distance from test equipment, and related variables, using standard formulas. Calibrates test equipment, such as magnetic particle, x-ray, and ultrasonic contact machines, to standard settings, following manual instructions. Sets up equipment to perform tests, and conducts tests on parts, following procedures established for specified tests performed. Examines surface-treated materials during penetrant and magnetic particle tests to locate and identify cracks or other defects, using black light. Moves transducer probe across part when conducting ultrasonic tests and observes CRT (cathode ray tube) screen to detect and locate discontinuities in metal structure [ULTRASONIC TESTER (any industry) 739.281-014]. My closest friend is retired after having been one for forty years, owed an inspection company and taught/certified many inspectors. He used to chuckle when I mentioned the physical demands as described in DOT. It is actually very physically demanding. He used to say CRCs would call him and argue about it being light and direct entry (likely because inspector occ came up with TSA) telling them they were simply wrong. Now his son and friend are doing it since the $$ is much better than jobs they could access with BS degrees. Lots of opportunity with more emphasis (finally) on infrastructure and US manufactured goods. I could put you in touch if you need more info (assuming he is willing to talk to more of us annoying CRCs asking silly questions)

I had not intended to jump into this discussion. However, I believe that the initial question was about non-destructive testing and not specific to metal testing. First, I would have to say that, based on my experience with this, the occupation definitely does not have transferability with other laboratory testing as the equipment used is quite specialized in how it is used and does require training and certification. We have a lab right here locally in Fort Lauderdale where I had the opportunity to place a WC client for training. The lab required that he also attend college level training for at least an AS degree in courses that they would require.

As for the testing, it was not limited at this lab to aircraft metal integrity. There was also non-destructive testing of concrete. They literally poured a "plug" from concrete used in highway and building  construction as well as testing on-site. Rebar and steel girders were also tested both in lab and on-site as needed.

On another occasion, I was involved in WC cases related to the construction of I-595, which in its original iteration was pretty corrupt. Built by Zito's Trucking of New Jersey. If you can imagine – not 10 years later it had to be completely re-constructed. Built in 2009 during the administration of a Governor who ran in primaries for President and reconstructed in 2020 (ongoing). Florida has another great Governor who would be President (not to be political- it's just history).

I was taken on a tour and shown evidence of the failed concrete testing. Chunks of concrete falling out of a highway overpass. The lab and that inspector were fired for reporting inadequate construction..  It did leave me nervous for the next decade traveling over the elevated portions of that highway. But I did learn a lot from those highway assignments.

    Best regards,
