Have any Life Care Planners ever had a case where you were asked to account for the cost of raising a child? I have a medical malpractice case involving a 23 year old single mother of a 3-year old. Tragically, the mother passed away. In addition to providing an earning capacity, I was also asked to determine if the cost of raising the child (now being borne by the grandmother), can be determined. I thought of including costing for 128 hours/week of child care (assuming an 40 hour/week work schedule) through age 18. I also considered looking at studies performed to quantify the costs of raising children through age 18 but that may include ancillary costing such as food and clothing that would have been required regardless of the mother's death. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

    Daniel,

A google search revealed your answer: $233,610 through age 17 according to a USDA study.

IMHO, the cost to raise a child would be the same...with or without a mother.

Isn't this an issue of the (economic) value of a mother's services?

I would not just go with a study from a Google search. You should ensure the data is reliable and from a valid and scientific study. What is the date of the study?  Does it consider factors SPECIFIC to your case?

Just be careful with taking a number from a Google search and consider it to be an expert opinion.

If you'd paid attention to my post, it referenced a USDA study, which is a federal agency.  If it was me, I would go to the study source and understand its underlying data, inclusive of sample size and methodology. My referencing a google search was synonymous with a quick search.  Clearly, anyone can spend more than 2 minutes researching the topic.

Snide remarks are not helpful to the poster.

P.S.: Wikipedia is a good open source.

Although in desperate need of updating, the USDA Expenditures on Children by Families 2015 (links below) will be very useful in your analysis or determination of the cost to raise a child.
