    Hello dear colleagues,

I know this topic has been discussed many times before but I am wondering what aptitude tests you use and why? I have been using the Valpar Pro-3000 but Valpar has stopped operating 3 years ago and the validity and norming information is decades old.

I have begun using CareerScope a few years ago and like the test battery but the most recent validity and norming information is from 1998. I contacted a VRI representative last year and was told there are no plans to re-norm their aptitude test anytime soon.

I have had a look at the DAT (Differential Aptitude Tests) Next Generation (https://www.talentlens.com/recruitment/assessments/dat-next-generation.html), which is quite recent and seems interesting. However, it is published by Pearson/Talentlens in the UK and cannot be purchased in North America at this time.

The CAPS is another option but aptitude scores don't relate directly to aptitude factors (GATB derived) found in the DOT or Canadian NOC, so I am not sure how the interpreting is done.

One last option I have found is the CFIT (CFIT | IRPCANADA), which looks promising. The norms are recent and it measures GATB-like aptitudes for G, V, N and S. It also provides sub-scores for fluid and crystallized intelligence. The only downside is that it does not measure other GATB aptitudes (i.e. P, Q, K, F and M). I have tried this test on myself and found it well designed but somewhat harder the CareerScope, Pro-3000 or GATB.

Thank you in advance for your comments and insights!

Since the pandemic, I have been using the WOWI, which can be administered in person or online.  https://wowi.com/

    Thank you John,

I was not aware of this company. I visited their website but could not find sample reports or data on when their aptitude test was normed or validated. Do the results correlate well with occupational aptitudes in the DOT?

Incidentally, I have do more research on the DAT Next Generation and found out it is actually available outside the UK (https://www.talentlens.com/recruitment/assessments/dat-next-generation.html). Do any of you use the Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT) in vocational evaluation? I have been considering using this test but my concern is that the aptitudes measured are different than GATB aptitudes found in the DOT or the Canadian Career Handbook. So, I am unsure how one would compare the test results with occupational aptitude requirements.

    Thanks.

    Francois,

The test was last normed in 2022. If you click on the administration tab, scroll all the way down to the bottom and you can view normative data. WOWI uses ONET/SOC codes for job matches. I would suggest you contact the publisher for sample reports.

Thank you John for how to find the norms. Thanks also to Steve for this research paper. It is interesting to see that high performing resident surgeons tend to have a similar interest profile. I will get in touch with the publisher to get an understanding of how aptitude scores relate to O*NET occupations.
