Today, the Department of Justice commemorates the thirty-second anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the preeminent civil rights law requiring equal opportunity for people with disabilities.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the opioid epidemic have exacted a steep toll on many people with disabilities and emphasize the continued urgency of ADA enforcement. The pandemic has shown the vital importance of web accessibility, as state and local governments and businesses rely increasingly on web-based operations. The department has also prioritized ensuring that state and local government employers do not use new technologies to discriminate against job applicants or employees with disabilities. And the department has enforced the ADA to safeguard the rights of people with opioid use disorder (OUD) who are in treatment or recovery. Finally, the department continues its enforcement in the areas of transit access and community integration.
