VRTS Section Exhibits at the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates Annual Conference

Vocational Rehabilitation Transition Services section Working to Promote Members' Services

As a benefit to our members, for the third consecutive year, the VRTS section exhibited at the COPAA Conference at the beginning of March. The purpose of the exhibit was to promote the services our members provide and give information on how to find a professional VRTS member. Exhibit materials available included a VRTS Professional Directory, developed for exhibiting at COPAA.

VRTS section members provide valuable and underutilized transition related services for special education students and other youth. Yet, many educational professionals, attorneys, advocates, and parents are not aware of the valuable services VRTS members perform. And many are not aware of private rehabilitation service providers.

Many of the 630 attendees stopped by the exhibit; they shared their experiences and asked many questions about vocational rehabilitation services. The attendees were interested in learning about the services that the VRTS section members provide and how to locate a vocational rehabilitation professional in their region. Feedback from the COPAA attendees confirms that many of the students they advocate for are not receiving vocational and transitional assessments or rehabilitation counseling, or the services they receive are inadequate and ineffective.

The VRTS section will continue to promote vocational rehabilitation services for students in special education; exhibiting at the COPAA Conference provides the opportunity to promote the services of VRTS members.
