Vocational Rehabilitation Transition Services Presentation at the COPAA Annual Conference

Vocational Rehabilitation Transition Services Promoted at the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates Annual Conference, Baltimore, Maryland.

VRTS member Elizabeth Watson & attorney Melissa Waugh presented IEP Transition Toolbox, at the COPAA 2020 Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

The presentation emphasized that Transition Assessments are fundamental for setting appropriate and realistic transition goals. Attorney Waugh outlined the legal framework for transition plans. Elizabeth described the essential elements of a transition assessment and how to use the assessment information to write appropriate transition plans and goals, as well as how to evaluate a proposed transition plan to determine if the plan meets the student's needs.

The attendees' feedback of the presentation confirms that many students they advocate for do not receive transition assessments, or the assessments do not provide the information needed to formulate appropriate transition plans and goals.

Presenting the IEP Transition Toolbox, at the COPAA conference provided the opportunity to educate other professionals on quality transition assessments and plans, and the benefits that vocational rehabilitation professionals offer to special education students and their advocates.
