    TOM SELMAN SCHOLARSHIP

    Tom Selman
    Tom Selman was instrumental in laying the foundation for Rehabilitation Counseling in the state of Texas. He was a mentor, leader, and counselor to professionals dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities. Tom stood for the integrity of the profession and the brand of the IARP Texas Chapter. His ability to communicate thoughtfully yet directly was empowering, further motivating a sense of purpose in the students who set out in this profession. His knowledge of the rehabilitation industry was seemingly limitless. His advocacy and consultations with top employers helped pave the way for others to begin employing people with disabilities. Tom Selman was known for his work as a Vice-President, professor, dear friend, and community leader, yet he remained humble and never yearned for attention. He was true to himself and the life he lived. His passion for the rehabilitation community inspired countless individuals and his legacy continues to inspire to this day. The IARP Texas Board is honored to award the Tom Selman Scholarship.


    Notes to Candidates for Scholarship
    1. The Texas Chapter of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP) will provide support for the Tom Selman Scholarship Recipient to help further the professional development of a graduate student in the State of Texas who has demonstrated dedicated excellence to their educational program; the field of rehabilitation counseling; and working with people with disabilities.
    2. Applicants must be a Texas resident enrolled in a current graduate student program majoring in Rehabilitation Counseling, who demonstrates the commitment to working in this field.
    3. The Scholarship Recipient will receive $1,500  written out to the financial aid/bursars department of the recipient's  educational institution.
    4. Applicants must be an IARP Student Member at time of application. For those that are not currently a member, student membership can be attained by going to https://rehabpro.org/page/membership for a fee of $15. Student Members are encouraged to join the IARP Texas Chapter at no additional charge.
    5. Students are required to submit:
      1. An experiential resume listing any community and school involvement, relevant work experiences, and volunteer activities, 
      2. A 300-500-word essay about their motivation in the pursuit of an advanced degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, future career aspirations, plans for current and future involvement in IARP, and how earning this award will benefit them. (Specifically address information regarding personal, employment, school, and community experiences in working with people with disabilities), 
      3. An unofficial transcript from academic institution in which the master’s degree is being pursued, and
      4. A signed statement of affirmation form confirming that all information submitted in the application is true and accurate


    CONDITIONS OF THE TOM SELMAN SCHOLARSHIP
    1. Must be pursuing a career in Rehabilitation Counseling
    2. Presently registered in a masters level Rehabilitation Counseling degree program
    3. Current resident of Texas 
    4. Student member of IARP
    Applications and associated required materials must be submitted to the Scholarship Chairperson by December 31, 2021. Please contact IARP Texas Scholarship Committee (Joanna Vasquez or Bob Cogburn) at iarptexas@gmail.com with any questions. 
    The committee will review and evaluate all applications and determine the scholarship recipient. The Tom Selman IAPP Texas Scholarship will be announced via email and IARP Texas Chapter website on 01/16/22 and will be awarded in person on the recipient’s campus at a later time.

    Instructions and Guidelines
    1. Go to the Application Form below.
    2. Fill out the Application Form completely. Edits and/or revision can be made through the application deadline of 12/31/21. 
    3. Submit an Experiential Resume.  List your community and school involvement, relevant work experience, volunteer activities, etc.  
    4. Submit a 300 to 500-word essay on the topics listed. The essay must be typed in Ariel Font with a size of 12, double spaced with 1.5-inch margins.  
    5. Submit an unofficial transcript from the academic institution where the master’s degree is being pursued.
    6. Sign and submit the Statement of Affirmation Form (open in Adobe Acrobat) confirming that all information submitted in the application is true and accurate.  


    Note: A Gmail account is required to upload the resume and essay to the online application. Applicants without a Gmail account may email the required documents to iarptexas@gmail.com. Please be sure to include the applicant’s name in the title of the documents and indicate “Tom Selman Scholarship” in the subject line.
