    (401) Caregiver Burden and Traumatic Brain Injury 
    Dennis Zgaljardic, Ph.D.

    The following presentation will discuss the physical, cognitive, and behavioral sequelae of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its impact on caregiver burden. The presentation will focus on empirically-validated research performed in this area as well as plans for future research initiatives looking at cognitive-behavioral interventions for family caregivers of persons who have acquired brain injuries who are returning to the community after residential rehabilitation.

    Learning Objectives:
    • To describe physical and behavioral needs of the traumatic brain injured patient post discharge from residential rehabilitation services.
    • To identify the impact of traumatic brain injury on family members, family life and family dynamics.
    • To discuss behavioral interventions to help alleviate psychological distress in family caregivers of individuals with traumatic brain injury.
    • To identify caregiver distress and burden.
    • To review the principles and values of the code of professional conduct for case managers.
