    Hi,

I have a Worker's Comp client who is asking for some work aptitude and ability testing for an injured worker who states he can not read.  He declined to take a CAPs assessment due to his self-reported inability to read.  The client has asked about using a VALPAR work sample test or have an onsite work assessment by a vocational evaluator.  Do these type of services exist anymore and is VALPAR work sample considered reliable anymore?  I was on their webite adn they said they no longer provide work samples and referred to another company in VA. We can't do a work assessment at an employer because the worker is not employed.  I don't have funding to buy large quantities of other types of assessment like the WOWI.  Any suggestions?  The Inured Worker lives in Maine.

From my experience, community colleges have assessments to test reading and other achievement levels of individuals with limited reading abilities. The tests are given to determine placement levels for adult education and ESL. I have referred many clients to college placement testing. Some colleges charge a small fee for this, commonly $25.00. This could be a starting point.

Also you might try Goodwill or Easter Seals, some locations do vocational testing and assess individuals with low reading levels. Their testing fees are very reasonable.

I agree with you Elizabeth…the colleges do the testing for free in most areas, and now with the additional testing capabilities in accordance with the ADA changes, they may even be able to do more extensive work!

    Thanks Paulette
