  • 1.  Latest on licensure movement across the country

Much is happening across multiple fronts that will greatly affect our industry. We are getting press releases and other notices at least weekly related to counseling licensure, accreditation (CORE/CACREP merger news) and the counseling profession as a whole.

As I noted a couple of weeks ago, there was a press release on the AMHCA-ACES-NBCC portability plan and the selling points for CACREP-only graduate programs and the NCC as the baseline standards for licensure are portability and protection of the public through national standard.

Now AASCB (American Association of State Counseling Boards) put this out on their website.

List Serv Question from North Carolina

NC is currently facing new legislation that would change our education accreditation requirements. We would like to get the following information from other states regarding their educational requirements:

Does your state accept applicants that have earned their degree from institutions that are only nationally accredited (non-CACREP and/or not regionally accredited)?

If yes, please provide an average number of applicants your state receives a year that fall into that category.

If yes, how long has your state’s rule/law been in effect to allow degrees from solely nationally accredited institutions?

If no, did your state’s rules change to allow only regionally accredited and/or CACREP?

If no, please provide an average number of applicants that you all deny a year due to the accreditation.

Please provide comments, if any, of any challenges your state has faced or is facing with accreditation.

    Cordially,

    Katrina Brent | Board Administrator

Any member in North Carolina, please let us know if you have connections with your state licensing board. If you don't please get connected to both monitor your state's educational requirements for licensure and to advocate for inclusion rather than exclusion of educational programs, i.e., against CACREP-only accreditation. At the very least, we should be advocating for reasonable grandfathering provisions.

    Lynn,

The State of Texas does not really have any set guidelines for rehabilitation counseling other than CCM and it's equivalents working with Workers' Compensation recipients.
I have been told the rules in Texas will most likely be determined by Insurance carriers and other financial institutions, NOT the Texas Legislature.
