I have spent my entire career in the field of employment and training starting with the CETA system, through JTPA, and onto
WIA. I moved out of that arena and began working as a Job Coach for a period of time. This led to a position as a
Vocational Specialist with Edwin Shaw Hospital, a facility that specialized in rehab efforts, particularly TBI patients. Through my work with Edwin Shaw Hospital, I began working with clients from the Rehabilitation Services Commission, or BVR in Ohio. I worked primarily in providing situational assessments and job placement services for these clients. I was ather successful in these efforts as I maintained a 95+% placement rate for my clients.
My work in placement led me to a fateful meeting with Kathy Trumm. Kathy began referring clients to me for placement and a friendship grew from our meetings. Kathy encouraged me to return to school and obtain my master's degree so I could move into case management. It was a three year journey to obtain my master's degree, with Kathy providing encouragement throughout the journey. Kathy was also responsible for introducing me to IARP and insisting I join "for my own good!" She was right, as usual, and I have embraced IARP over the years.
During that time, I have been bothered by some of the comments regarding people who work in private rehab as being "from the dark side." It's time for all to realize that there is just as important a role for private rehab as there is for public rehab and that we should be working together, rather than apart as we apparently have been.
Others have paved the way for me, and this is my opportunity to do my part for the next generation.
