TSA Methodology

    Hello all,

I've recently run across The Transferability of Work Skills Analysis process. It allows you to identify a person's worker trait factors across 7 main areas. Has anyone else used this method? I don't know really anything about it but would like to know more. I'm hoping to find information about what underlying data it uses, how it functions, who designed it, and how reliable it is. Any info will be helpful. Thanks

Thanks Jeff. SkillTran is what I have used for years and I am familiar with OASYS and the process involved with it. It's fantastic so thank you for that. I understand that The Transferability of Work Skills Analysis is the old way of doing it but I'd like to know when it stopped being used or any information on it at all really. There isn't much out there that is found easily.

Might look at Elliott & Fitzpatrick site - http://www.elliottfitzpatrick.com/index.html

From their opening page by Dr. Tim Field, it seems that they are beginning to wind down its operations. Dr. Field contributed immensely to the growth of our industry!

Tim is a wonderful fellow and true leader in our field.
Young CRCs and VEs missed out on the incredibly nerdly but somehow very satisfying and incredibly educational experience of spending hours and hours (billable) completing an old blue folding VDARE form. Back when a PC was about the same cost as a new car and software costs sometimes needed easy monthly payments VDARE was in everyones files. The tactile, penciled, page flipping back and forth with DOT and SCODOT and the forced, repetitive, experience gained was invaluable. There was something exquisite about it all

Scott, there really was something elegant about that form. I still have some blue VDARE forms in my office. Likely time to be getting rid of those. Sigh….

Elegant indeed. But it sure motivated me to want to automate it! ;-)

Yes, thankful for all of your work and invaluable resources, Jeff. Sometime in the mid-80s I was begrudgingly required to mothball our beloved, massive IBM Selectric and the boxes of white out bought by the gross. The loan for the IBM PC, printer and related was for about $25,000 (in 2025 dollar value). I remember meeting with good old Gale Gibson (RIP) some time after that about purchasing his software and thinking oh Lord, if I bought in, that would mean yet another big loan. About that time, I turned down a cell phone sales guy, brother of my best friend, trying to sell me a massive cell phone in a satchel which allegedly would "pay for itself in no time" at the current dollar equivalent of about $10,000. Damn, this VR stuff was getting expensive.
I kept re-ordering more VDARE and #2 Ticonderogas. VDARE helped with showing the more haughty counselor types attempting transition to VR the door, so complex, "can't we just say what we think.....?"
But then you came along eventually with this groovy pay as you use it situation. Perfect for a cheap SOB like me! I cannot imagine doing TSA without your stuff. Wish you would have forced the thousands of us VR and VE folks to do our own new DOT already.  I have heard others "explain" how they do TSA  without DOT and your tools  but it sounds a lot like the parent voices in a Charlie Brown video to me. Blah blah Word salad BS which might work, kind of, in testimony to folks who know nothing about our stuff.
    Keep at it!

Blue sheet comments led me to reflect on my transferable skills analysis journey away from them to: Ability Information Systems (AIS) dial up,  to a CAPCO ( the Capability Corporation) standalone clam shell laptop,  to VERTEK-OASYS loaded on various computer types,  & finally OASYS SkillTRAN. Dr. Ralph Matkin was an early advisor on the choices, before Gale Gibson, and more currently Jeff Truthan.

My first piece of office equipment was also an IBM Correcting Selectric III. The local IBM Office Store line of credit allowed for the purchase of an early PC, printer, and 300 baud modem. The slow modem was immediately returned for a 1200 baud modem since the AIS long distance connection charges were expensive by the minute.

Ralph told a story of trying to testify at trial with the lap top, only to be stopped by an attorney who objected to its use. Something along the line of,  "I want to know what you think, not the computer".

    More VDARE related

After 15 years working professionally in Alaska, it seemed like a business opportunity existed in private rehab. It was 1978 or 79 when I opened the first private practice by a rehab counselor in the state.  Workers comp was the bread and butter and vocational assessment leading to an organized method for vocational planning after an injury was challenging.  I became aware of Dr. Tim Field through networking with a colleague in the "lower 48."

I attended one of his conferences on VDARE and discovered some very valuable information.  Later I attended the first annual NARPPS (IARP) conference in 1981 and Tim was a speaker.  By reaching out to him to retain his VDARE services to help with some of my vocational opinion cases, a life changing relationship began. It became apparent that I had a lot to learn. Over 2-3 years we developed a mentoring relationship and I approached him to see if he would be amenable to becoming my major advisor if admitted to the Ph.D. program at the University of Georgia. He agreed and I applied.  In 1984 at the age of 40, I sold my Alaskan private practice and we (my wife after resigning from her comptroller position) moved to Georgia so I could pursue the doctorate.

That decision changed my life and professional capabilities in ways hard to describe. Tim is a true visionary. He, his wife Janet (a very talented stats and software designer) and perhaps one other associate were designing a software program to automate the VDARE process.  As part of the Ph.D. program as an intern, I was invited to write documentation and user guides for an early version of the transferability software (VDARE). I am sure that I still have some blue VDARE  worksheets in storage.  Amazing changes over the years!

In sum, Tim was a speaker at conferences I attended, an instructor in my program, my Ph.D. advisor, a mentor, colleague, coauthor, co-presenter, and a great friend (along with Janet). He has given freely of his time and talents to an untold number of people.  Although I recognize that many others have helped shape our profession, Tim's visions and contributions (beyond VDARE) to the profession, IARP and other organizations cannot be overstated. It's been a true honor to be associated with him over many, many years.

Roger, I echo your words. You and Tim are true icons in our field and it's my been my privilege to know you both. This is a great history lesson.

Long life and good health to you both. We are a fading breed, but I hope we have many more years to go before the light finally goes out.

Roger, I love knowing this.  By the time I met you, obviously, you were in Georgia (I'm a Weedling).  I had no how you and Paula had arrived in Atlanta.  Yes, Tim and Janet have given so very much to our field (pardon the pun) as have you!

    Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you Roger for sharing this.  I also did not know this part of your history.....and I must repeat my usual refrain that history is important.

I too echo how significant Tim (and you) have been to our profession.  You and Tim, and many others have given unselfishly of yourselves and your knowledge, foresight and wisdom.

I am so grateful to Tim for pulling together a book on our history - "A History of Private Sector Rehabilitation".  For those who have not read it, maybe it is time. It started with a weekend in Santa Cruz long ago with a number of us going through the old, dusty NARPPS boxes...including our beloved Ann Wallace.

I am truly honored to have had professional and personal time with Tim and Janet, and I love sharing this now as opposed to posthumously.

I also share Bob Taylor's beautiful words of good health and long life to you and all of our colleagues.

I'm going to set the blue sheets aside for a moment and add my 2 cents about what an honor and a pleasure it has been to know Tim Field and Roger Weed.  I think that it is rare for a person in any field (no pun intended) to actually know persons who have helped set the standard for the work that they do.  But for me the cherry on top is that not only have I attended numerous seminars that these gentlemen have offered, and read many of their scholarly articles and books, but I have also served on Boards with them, shared ideas with them as fellow past Presidents of IARP/NARPPS, and had many opportunities to have friendly meals conversations with these gentlemen.  Tim and Roger are not only brilliant men, but they are witty and fun, and always available to answer any IARP members' questions.  It has been one of the joys of my professional and personal life, to know these fellows.

Well said Steve. I too benefitted from the advice and counsel of Roger and Time during my time as NARPPS President and leading up to our transition to IARP. Roger and Tim were always available to me and took whatever time was necessary to assist me with an issue facing our Association. Their willingness and enthusiasm for making our Association the best we could be led me and Steve Shedlin, our President Elect at the time, to create the Council of Past Presidents, which served as a "collective" for a current president to tap into the collective wisdom of those who came before. This was of tremendous help to me. Thank you, Roger, and Tim, for all that you have done for us personally and professionally. I, for one, will be forever grateful to each of you.

Agree! There was a time, not so long ago, that one or the other (or maybe both) of these gents were on the roster at conference after conference. And no one I know ever tired of their ubiquitous presence. It seemed that every time you would collect more pearls, method, process....science. Coming out of private rehab at the time (so populated by unqualified claim examiners, burned out whatevers, ignorant of basics, Rehab 101) it was so great to have folks actually caring and teaching such stuff, forging profession.

I too enjoyed being on NARPPS ( IARP) board years ago while rach were President. I was timid and a bit awed at first. But in time I found each to be warm, kind, funny, thoughtful; just regular dudes.

Retiring and downsizing again,  my wife could not quite understand my need to hang on to just a few of their classic texts, " let it go!!" Strangely difficult.
    Thank you, fellows!

I had Dr. Ralph Matkin as one of my professors who taught a Private Rehab focused class at SIU although the course title was probably something else and did not just cover Private Rehab. He had written a book with a Silver cover on Private Sector Rehab.  I probably still have the book in my garage. He was my second favorite professor. Dr Ted F. Riggar was my favorite and I was one of his GA's. I know I gave him grey hairs especially when it came time to write my paper and when he would look at what i was wearing and Im sure he thought is she going to wear those short running shorts to the practicum interview?  He thought he was being clever and had me come by and pick up a book to take to the lady who was going to interview me about an hour before the interview.  Of course, I was dressed to the nines in a dress and shoe purse ensemble that was very appropriate.    He had a big look on this face and said OK now you look nice!  I told him of course, i know how to dress and are your forgetting i also work at a very nice ladies shop at the mall?  I said I ride a bike and walk to class and look great wearing shorts so why spend money on clothes to wear to class?  i of course could not help but point out the two others doing their practicums that really needed help with what was appropriate attire.  I hear that he told stories about me for years!  I did tell him I would buy a red car not light blue like advised in an article he wrote and other that court, I would wear as much Red and bright colors as possible.  He asked me to speak to his class several years later, and yes, I wore a Red Suit white blouse with red and black print.  He said, my Red did not surprise him at all!  I told him don't worry, I will make sure the students know they will have a better chance for success if they wear Dark blue and so on.  It is weird to see Dr. Matkin's name mentioned today, as I was just thinking about him not even two days ago and of course my mine immediatley went to remembering Dr. Riggar as well.
