Subject:  REMINDER TO COMPLETE THE SUMMIT SURVEY!

There are only 2 weeks left to complete the Survey regarding the 96 Consensus and Majority Statements and their role at the 2025 Summit.

We have 59 responses so far, please ensure your voice is heard.

LCP Summits are for Life Care Planners about Life Care Planning and the Consensus and Majority Statements will be part of the 2025 Summit!

Over the past 10 months in a Work Group, 30 volunteers have reviewed the 96 Consensus and Majority Statements at the Chair's request for Categorization, Organization and Potential recommendation. Their efforts were significant enough that it was felt all should have the opportunity to review their work.

Attached is the survey sharing their results and seeking you agreement/disagreement with their findings. We recommend you review each statement and the recommendation independently to verify your agreement or disagreement with their outcomes.

This is not a research project, but a survey for all Life Care Planners to have a voice in shaping the Summit Agenda.

We have continued to work to develop the 2025 Summit and how best we can address the concerns and input from the Work Group and others!

Please complete before February 14, 2025, and let us know if you have any questions.

    Dear IARP members,
I am curious if other survey respondents are having concerns about the design of the pre-summit survey? I do not want to note my concerns here because I do not want to bias potential responses. If you do have concerns, I would appreciate hearing what those are and if you prefer, you can email me directly at tanya@owenvocational.com

Tanya, I was very glad to see your post. I was very disappointed at the structure of the survey. It was highly biased, in my opinion, and did not allow for varied, objective responses. It was very leading and dismissive of prior surveys.

It will not serve us well in the future.

    Tanya and all,

This is a survey to assist in coordinating our Agenda for the Minneapolis Life Care Planning Summit in May.

This is not a research study.

The Work Group of 30 volunteers put in hours of work to aid in developing the Summit agenda. The survey was a means to share their work and obtain input.

This survey is to aid in coordinating the Summit agenda. This will be used for planning purposes only.

Fortunately we have over 60 people who have responded at this point and this will absolutely help shape the Summit agenda.

We look forward to having people participate in the Summit, and many thanks to the volunteers who have spent countless hours in the Work Group and in planning for this Summit.

Reminder, Life Care Planning Summits are for the Life Care Planner, about Life Care Planning conducted by Life Care Planners!!

Since 2000 Life Care Planners have routinely gotten together to review and develop cutting edge issues and best practices.

For nearly a quarter of century practitioners have been pivotal in defining best practices and emerging issues in this specialty practice of Life Care Planning.

You can review the full collection of Summits and results in JLCP Volume 16:4, plus the 2022 Summit published in JLCP 21:1

We look forward to seeing you all in Minneapolis and hear your voices.

    On We Go!

    Dear colleagues,

I am happy to see life care planners discussing and feeling concerned about the future of our consensus and majority statements. As a Summit Committee co-chair I value the input about the survey.

For the purpose of the survey, do you agree or disagree with the work group's conclusions? We understand that you may agree with part but not as a whole. I know we do not like being pinned down to yes or no answers... but that is what you are being asked to do for most of these. Yes or no, my friends.

We are looking at the work group's conclusions and the decision tree that led them to them. The work group has done valuable work examining how the statements are found in other life care planning documents, such as the Standards of Practice for Life Care Planners.

During the summit, we will zoom out to reanalyze the statements and the decision tree regarding what leads to removal. In talking with Tanya, Roger, Mary, and Reg last week, we got a lot of good direction regarding the next steps in preparing for Summit. (it may involve homework, sorry!)

We will do the research at the Summit, similar to past summits! We would love to see you there so we can count everyone's voices.

    Kind Regards,

    Amy

    Hi Amy

It is no easy task – but progress is important.  It would be interesting at the summit to include an opportunity on how one would respond to these changes or any continued standard in a deposition.  Further, how any particular statement can be used against a life care planner in a rebuttal report.

In litigation as life care planners we cannot control limitations placed by a Judges ruling.  In the spirit of progress I completed the survey – I do have a few comments that I will send separately.

I appreciate the hard work of the committee and know that it not easy synthesizing so many different perspectives!

It is apparent that a tremendous amount of thought has gone into this already. Amy, you are correct that it is difficult to select from only 2 choices, so I hope the Summit provides room for further modification or choices.

A huge concern for me is maintaining foundation for standards of practice. Consensus statements are one source that gives the SOP committee grounds for what goes into the standards. Remember the SOP are NOT created by committee, but reflect standards that exist and are compiled into the SOP document. If Consensus statements are removed, there MUST be other authoritative sources to maintain that concept in the next edition of SOP. Please be careful that we do not erase the foundation for our standards. Having a separate "guidance" document seems to be where you are heading. A guidance document could be used when updating SOP, but make sure that guidance is not easily removed and changed, or we again remove foundation for SOP. That is one of the beauties of Consensus statements: They are stable. Even when they are removed, there should still be a compilation of "retired" statements, ideally explaining why they are retired.  This is valuable history for guiding future decisions.

Consensus statements do not cease to be needed because they are in the SOP; the SOP is valid because the consensus statements exist!

    Karen,
Thank you very much for the perspective. History is very important, as is documenting it. We have come a long way!
Please recall from A History of Private Sector Rehabilitation published in 2014 by Dr. Tim Field, the 1st Edition of the Standards of Practice (SOP) was created in May 1998. First draft developed by Dr. Roger Weed with input from 200 participants at the 1997 Annual Life Care Planning Conference and other education offerings.
We are now on the 4th Edition of the SOP in large part due to your leadership and many volunteers.
The first LCP Summit was in April 2000 in Dallas, TX where the first Consensus and Majority Statements were developed.
Historically, the SOP came first and ever since, these two sources (and likely the upcoming Costing Framework Committee's work) have been living documents breathing life into each other, evolving over time.
Some Consensus and Majority Statements were deleted at the 2010 Summit through Real Time voting, and again in the Delphi Study in 2018. Both were written up and published in the JLCP. All Summit write ups can be found in JLCP 16:4 and 22:1.
Again, looking forward to a productive Summit in Minneapolis!
I have already registered and hope to see you all there.

My personal feeling is that the Summit is now a waste of time and has run its course. I felt this way after the last summit and after seeing this document, my feeling is magnified.   There is way too much bias in the selection of language and the questions/statements. I can see nothing positive coming out of the summit compared to what already exists. I hate to be the naysayer here, but as one of the most senior life care planners in the association and a past president of IARP, I think I have seen it all, and believe there is merit to my position.

The same people seem to be involved as leaders in every summit, and I believe it is only for their own personal gain, and to be able to write a paper that they can attach their name to as an author afterwards.  I know this sounds cynical, but after more than 40 years of life care planning practice, I believe there is merit to my opinion.  I will not be attending the summit as I see it as totally unnecessary.

I know people have worked hard and I respect that, but I can see nothing positive coming out of the summit with this proposed structure compared to what already exists in the literature.

This is quite a spirited discussion. I hope it does not discourage people from attending. On the contrary, this shows the need for gatherings of people with diverse opinions. Otherwise, the future happens to us rather than us creating the future. Many past Summits have been contentious, but the result is that we have stronger conclusions. If your voice is not represented, then that view is lost and will not be part of the future.

Not trying to pile on here but wanting to share my thoughts.

I started the survey this past weekend.  I found the questions to be leading - and leading to the conclusion of to remove something or to keep it as advisory (or similar language).  I stopped the survey and don't plan to finish it.  I just don't think the questions are not that black and white.

I know a lot of the consensus statements are duplicative - okay!  And that is our history.  Frankly, I'd love to have something showing where similar statements are made - what a treasure that would be!  My concern in this is that we will be erasing our history.  As I see it, these statements are consensus and reflect the issues we've grappled with over our history and what we've determined is important as a profession.  And that is rich, rich history.  These statements have also, I imagine, informed the development and evolution of our SOP - so another reason to maintain this history.

Right now, we have amazing individuals who were foundational to this practice - and they are still alive!  At some point in the future, they/we won't be alive.  And how will our history be see then?  Will those who come after us be able to track why we made the decisions about practice that we did? Not if we erase our history.

I appreciate all that the working group has done - I know these kinds of groups take an enormous amount of time.

Having recently participated in Expert Witness training with SEAK, I noticed that many of the recommendations to remove certain verbiage runs contrary to the Expert Witness recomendations.   Some of the changes need more clarification to understand the what and why for the changes in a legal and professional context.  A lot of research and effort went into the original work.

In my opinion, the aggregrate of the removal recommendations diminishes the professional standards. I did my best to complete the survey based upon my subjective understanding of the questions and keeping in mind the benefit of these changes from an Expert Witness perspective.

I have already registered for the Forum.  Opportunity for dialogue and discussion with peers and planning for the future of Life Care Planning is valuable to me.

I could not agree more with the concerns being expressed about the format, bias, and unclear intentions of this survey, which clearly aim to make sweeping changes of our field, standards, and credibility.

I hope to see many of you at the Summit to bring your years of experience with not only Summits and how they work, but the field of life care planning in general. I, for one, do not want to lose our history, legacy, and credibility as a field. I have learned so much from many of you, especially those expressing concern on this topic.

I agree with you Karen, speaking up at the Summit is a way to ensure the voices of those with experience and knowledge are heard, and to protect the future of life care planning. Which day by day feels more important and pressing.

    Good morning,

After all of the discussion, I was interested to know thoughts on whether the content of the summit will be beneficial or if we are just discussing the politics I guess. I was planning to go to the summit in hopes of learning new education regarding life care planning (I'm a relatively new LCP), however some of the messages are a little discouraging. I am located in Nebraska, so Minnesota is at least drivable for me to go comparable to the yearly conferences, which require flying.

    I appreciate your insight,

    Vanessa,

I hope this finds you well and not too discouraged.

I really encourage you to look at those Journal of Lifecare Planning articles I've previously posted about, 16:4 and 22:1. They memorialize the history and evolution of the Summits.

Life care planning as a sub specialty practice is one which began in litigation when first mentioned by Drs. Deutsch and Raffa in 1984, and later developed through Patty McCollum, Roger Weed, and many others documenting this practice beginning in 1998 which has grown and been evolving.

Through the Summits, we bring our best practices and concerns together.

It is the best place for all of us to have our voices heard, obtain practical education and a place for practitioners to speak to the leadership of Organizations, Educational programs and Credentialing bodies.

Hopefully, perceived cynicism from individuals on the listserve does not discourage you from attending.

Now is an ideal time to have your voice heard, especially as you move forward into the future.

Happy to talk to you anytime, and hope to see you there.

    Hi Vanessa,

Go to the conference and consider the following goals

    ·         Listen and take away at least one point that the group appears to have common ground... that is a nugget of gold to reinforce your own practice.

    ·         Listen and take away at least one point that the group appears to struggle with ... research and be prepared because you will see its ugly head appear in an opposing expert rebuttal.

    ·         Find at least one seasoned professional and either sit at a meal, meet on break, or just ask to meet for coffee and get at least one lessoned learned in their career as a life care planner.

    ·         Go to each session and ask yourself what is one nugget of gold that I can get out of each speaker.

I you take those goals with you to each conference you will have made great strides forward. I have been around for a long time – and when I take this approach at any conference it helps me gain insight into my own practice.

    Best

    Becky

    Dear Colleagues,

I've been following this discussion closely and appreciate the passion and dedication that so many of you bring to the field of Life Care Planning. I want to take a moment to respond, not just as Chair of the LCP Board but as someone who believes deeply in the importance of our profession, our collective voice, and the role of the Summit in shaping both.

First and foremost, the Summit is-and always has been-about Life Care Planners coming together to advance our field. It is not a simple process, nor has it ever been without debate. That debate, however, is precisely why it is so valuable. A profession that does not engage in self-examination and growth will stagnate, and we owe it to ourselves and to future practitioners to continue refining our practice with a balance of historical foundation and forward momentum.

To address a few specific concerns raised in the posts above:

    1.     The Value of Participation – Dismissing the Summit as unnecessary because some of us think we "have seen it all" does a disservice to new and seasoned professionals alike. No two careers have had the same contours, and every day the context in which we practice is evolving-medically, legally, and technologically. Our individual experience only adds to the richness of our profession through active conversation. For those newer to Life Care Planning, there is no better way to gain insight into both the consensus and the contentions of our field-because you will inevitably have to answer for both.

    2.     The Role of Debate in Our Profession – It is understandable that some find aspects of the survey or process frustrating, but disagreement is not a reason to disengage-it is a reason to show up and contribute. If you feel the survey was flawed, or the direction of discussions is missing key perspectives, the best way to address that is by participating in the Summit, ensuring that your voice is part of the dialogue. Silence is not neutral. It leaves decisions to those who do participate.

    3.     Preserving Our Professional Standards – The concerns about losing historical foundations are valid, and they should be part of the conversation at the Summit. This is exactly why participation matters-so that the profession's history is honored while also ensuring we remain adaptable in an evolving landscape.

    4.     Encouragement to Attend – To those, like Vanessa, who are debating whether to attend-this discussion is evidence of why you should go. You will walk away with insights that will shape your practice, connections that will support your career, and an understanding of the very debates that you will face in expert testimony, depositions, and rebuttal reports. This is where you learn, grow, and solidify your expertise.

    5.     The Hard Work Behind the Summit – A significant amount of time and effort has gone into preparing for this Summit, with many volunteers dedicating months of work to reviewing our Consensus and Majority Statements. Whether you ultimately agree or disagree with their work (which will be decided as a collective at the summit!), their commitment to this process deserves recognition. I want to make it very clear: their work is not about personal gain but about ensuring the profession continues to evolve with integrity. I, as should we all, have the utmost gratitude for the people willing to put in this work. Without volunteers in this organization, we become nothing.

At the end of the day, we share a common goal: maintaining the strength and integrity of Life Care Planning. That happens not when we disengage, but when we show up-especially when we disagree.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Summit and continuing this important discussion in a setting where we can work together toward the future of our profession.

    Elizabeth

Well said Elizabeth!  The survey is but a tool.  The summits are always a lively and thought provoking enterprise.  Refining our profession as we see fit.   I don't see the bias.  Thanks to the Summit Committee!
