Subject: RE: Life Care Planning Summit Survey - Please participate in shaping the Agenda
Dear Colleagues,
I've been following this discussion closely and appreciate the passion and dedication that so many of you bring to the field of Life Care Planning. I want to take a moment to respond, not just as Chair of the LCP Board but as someone who believes deeply in the importance of our profession, our collective voice, and the role of the Summit in shaping both.
First and foremost, the Summit is-and always has been-about Life Care Planners coming together to advance our field. It is not a simple process, nor has it ever been without debate. That debate, however, is precisely why it is so valuable. A profession that does not engage in self-examination and growth will stagnate, and we owe it to ourselves and to future practitioners to continue refining our practice with a balance of historical foundation and forward momentum.
To address a few specific concerns raised in the posts above:
1. The Value of Participation – Dismissing the Summit as unnecessary because some of us think we "have seen it all" does a disservice to new and seasoned professionals alike. No two careers have had the same contours, and every day the context in which we practice is evolving-medically, legally, and technologically. Our individual experience only adds to the richness of our profession through active conversation. For those newer to Life Care Planning, there is no better way to gain insight into both the consensus and the contentions of our field-because you will inevitably have to answer for both.
2. The Role of Debate in Our Profession – It is understandable that some find aspects of the survey or process frustrating, but disagreement is not a reason to disengage-it is a reason to show up and contribute. If you feel the survey was flawed, or the direction of discussions is missing key perspectives, the best way to address that is by participating in the Summit, ensuring that your voice is part of the dialogue. Silence is not neutral. It leaves decisions to those who do participate.
3. Preserving Our Professional Standards – The concerns about losing historical foundations are valid, and they should be part of the conversation at the Summit. This is exactly why participation matters-so that the profession's history is honored while also ensuring we remain adaptable in an evolving landscape.
4. Encouragement to Attend – To those, like Vanessa, who are debating whether to attend-this discussion is evidence of why you should go. You will walk away with insights that will shape your practice, connections that will support your career, and an understanding of the very debates that you will face in expert testimony, depositions, and rebuttal reports. This is where you learn, grow, and solidify your expertise.
5. The Hard Work Behind the Summit – A significant amount of time and effort has gone into preparing for this Summit, with many volunteers dedicating months of work to reviewing our Consensus and Majority Statements. Whether you ultimately agree or disagree with their work (which will be decided as a collective at the summit!), their commitment to this process deserves recognition. I want to make it very clear: their work is not about personal gain but about ensuring the profession continues to evolve with integrity. I, as should we all, have the utmost gratitude for the people willing to put in this work. Without volunteers in this organization, we become nothing.
At the end of the day, we share a common goal: maintaining the strength and integrity of Life Care Planning. That happens not when we disengage, but when we show up-especially when we disagree.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the Summit and continuing this important discussion in a setting where we can work together toward the future of our profession.
Elizabeth

Hi Vanessa,
Go to the conference and consider the following goals
· Listen and take away at least one point that the group appears to have common ground... that is a nugget of gold to reinforce your own practice.
· Listen and take away at least one point that the group appears to struggle with ... research and be prepared because you will see its ugly head appear in an opposing expert rebuttal.
· Find at least one seasoned professional and either sit at a meal, meet on break, or just ask to meet for coffee and get at least one lessoned learned in their career as a life care planner.
· Go to each session and ask yourself what is one nugget of gold that I can get out of each speaker.
I you take those goals with you to each conference you will have made great strides forward. I have been around for a long time – and when I take this approach at any conference it helps me gain insight into my own practice.
Best
Becky

Good morning,
After all of the discussion, I was interested to know thoughts on whether the content of the summit will be beneficial or if we are just discussing the politics I guess. I was planning to go to the summit in hopes of learning new education regarding life care planning (I'm a relatively new LCP), however some of the messages are a little discouraging. I am located in Nebraska, so Minnesota is at least drivable for me to go comparable to the yearly conferences, which require flying.
I appreciate your insight,
Vanessa

Dear colleagues,
I am happy to see life care planners discussing and feeling concerned about the future of our consensus and majority statements. As a Summit Committee co-chair I value the input about the survey.
For the purpose of the survey, do you agree or disagree with the work group's conclusions? We understand that you may agree with part but not as a whole. I know we do not like being pinned down to yes or no answers... but that is what you are being asked to do for most of these. Yes or no, my friends.
We are looking at the work group's conclusions and the decision tree that led them to them. The work group has done valuable work examining how the statements are found in other life care planning documents, such as the Standards of Practice for Life Care Planners.
During the summit, we will zoom out to reanalyze the statements and the decision tree regarding what leads to removal. In talking with Tanya, Roger, Mary, and Reg last week, we got a lot of good direction regarding the next steps in preparing for Summit. (it may involve homework, sorry!)
We will do the research at the Summit, similar to past summits! We would love to see you there so we can count everyone's voices.
Kind Regards,
Amy

As Co-Chairs of the 2025 Summit and Chair of the Work group, we are inviting all Life Care Planners to assist in shaping the agenda for the May 16 & 17, 2025 Summit.
Registration is open! https://rehabpro.org/event/lcp-summit-2025
Over the past 10 months in a Work Group led by Cloie Johnson, 30 volunteers have reviewed the 96 Consensus and Majority Statements at our request for Categorization, Organization and Potential recommendation.
Attached is the survey to aid in planning for the Summit. You will see the outcome of the Work Group and we invite your review. We recommend you review these options independently to verify your agreement or disagreement with their outcomes.
This is not a research project, but a survey for all Life Care Planners to participate in to have a voice. Please complete before February 14, 2025.
Please forward this on to any Life Care Planning groups or organizations you are a member of, and encourage all Life Care Planners to respond.
This is for Life Care Planners about Life Care Planning and will be part of the 2025 Summit thanks to your efforts
