  • 1.  clarity on hours to complete a LCP- plan

    Hello everyone,

Can some of you please chime in and share w/ me the typical hours you have seen in your practice to complete a full LCP ?  In my practice I have used 60-65 or so hours. I am just curious if this is more common than not or, if my hours are aberrant. Thank you in advance.

I have only done one and it was a non-catastrophic injury.  My assistant and I spent a collective 60 hours but I think over half of the time was devoted to the learning curve of doing something for the first time.  I have collaborated with another life care planner and I reviewed and made medical recommendations and these took 4-7 hours of time.

Of course it depends on how complex the case is, how many treaters, etc, whether there is a wage loss component, if meeting the person or doctors in person or by phone,
and how many times one has to revise the plan because of delays in trial dates.
Thus, it can be anywhere from 10 to 40 or more hours.  Some are pretty simple and straightforward because the physician (maybe the only treater) says in a report what
the future care will be and may even give costs, while others drag on for years with multiple treaters, gaps in treatment, pre-existing conditions, or disconnect between opinions
of treaters and CME physicians.   Also, it varies as to how long the plan is; I have seen 100 page reports and 18 page reports.   So, there doesn't seem to be any average number
of hours, at least from my experience of doing over 200 LCPs.

    Nancy,

Most of my life care plans and rebuttals are for non-catastrophic injuries. I average around 20-30 hours to complete a non-catastrophic life care plan. I haven't done enough true catastrophic cases to have a solid knowledge of my own average, but when asked by an attorney I quote 50-60 hours.
