FLCPR Awards

The Foundation for Life Care Planning Research established an Awards committee with representation from the FLCPR board, the IALCP board, Virginia Commonwealth University, Georgia State University and The University of Florida. Five categories of award are to be recognized and may be given annual. Most important to understand is in each instance these awards may be given but will not always be given on an annual basis. Only in the instance in which the Awards committee, in its recommendation to the full Board of the FLCPR deems that a deserving individual or research project or paper meets the designated criteria will the award actually be presented. It is the intention of the FLCPR to maintain each of these awards at the highest level of Standards and thereby have associated with each the level of meaning and acceptance, which should become attached to each.

1) Outstanding Life Care Planning Educator

Criteria for this award include demonstrated evidence of significant contributions to the dissemination of life care planning knowledge. The candidate should have teaching experience at the university level (but there may be other evidence to supplant this criterion). It is expected that candidates will demonstrate effective life care planning education through in-person or online classes, conference presentations, publications (peer and non-peer reviewed) and/or other means of disseminating life care planning related knowledge. Community service related to life care planning is also expected.

2) Life Care Planner Life Time Achievement Award

The Life Time achievement is to be given by this committee only when a deserving recipient is found. It is not necessarily to be given annually although it can be awarded annually if it is appropriate to do so. Nominations will not be sought but anyone can submit nominations from outside the committee. The committee can undertake a search for candidates and can look to their respective organizations for insights into appropriate candidates. For the Life Time Achievement Award the Foundation Board would expect the individual to have contributed significantly to the body of literature in Life Care Planning. Additionally there is an expectation that this person would have advanced the field through word and/or deed. By this the individual can be considered based on their work in teaching life care planning, direct work with patients, (applied life care planning), advances in the applications of Life Care Planning or significant improvements in the networking capabilities of Life Care Planners. Any activity that enhances the reliability and validity of the Life Care Planning process and advances not only the process but also the general sub specialty of Life Care Planning can be considered. It is essential that to be considered the potential recipient be known for maintaining the highest personal and professional ethical standards. No actions against their licensure or certifications should be in their backgrounds.

3) Patricia McCollom/FLCPR Research Award

For Research that:

Meets the highest standards of design, methodology and analysis.
Contributes to the field of Life Care Planning.
Provides meaningful data that can be applied directly to the Life Care Planning and case management practices.

The Research Award should be viewed as prestigious and sought after. Most importantly is should help to encourage individuals to perform research in Life Care Planning. It is to be given by this committee only when a deserving recipient is found. It is not necessarily to be given annually although it can be awarded annually if it is appropriate to do so. Nominations will not be sought but anyone can submit nominations from outside the committee. The committee can undertake a search for candidates and can look to their respective organizations for insights into appropriate candidates.

For the Research Award the Foundation Board would expect an individual to have made a significant contribution not only to the body of literature in Life Care Planning but to the everyday practices of Life Care Planners and either directly or indirectly to the lives and well being of the disabled.

Potential candidates for the research award should have their research project or projects reviewed by the research committee of the Foundation. This should, at a minimum include Dr. Kendall, Dr. Weed, and Dr. Reid in addition to Dr. Sawyer of the Awards Committee or their equivalent replacements as time moves forward. They should be evaluating the project for research design, methodology and statistical analysis in addition to the criteria stated above.

Winner of the Research Award receives a recognition plaque and a check for $1,500, (2007).

4) Sheri Jasper Memorial Recognition Award

The awards committee will present an award to an individual who exemplifies the consummate professional who continues to be a positive influence in the life care planning specialty practice. The honor is NOT necessarily restricted to life care planning professionals. Furthermore, it is expected to only be awarded when a deserving person is identified and therefore may or may not be an annual event.

Criteria recommendations include that the person:

Evidences a consistent positive, supportive, friendly and encouraging attitude toward colleagues.
Seeks out "newbies" at conferences and facilitate introductions to others.
Exemplifies a willingness to go the extra mile with good humor and perseverance (such as helping staff at conferences by volunteering or assisting in resolving problems).
Mentors others without expectation for personal gain.
Is a model for others in promoting life care planning (advancing the specialty practice, speaking about life care planning is positive ways, offering new visions, developing new concepts or practices, etc.)
Supporting Research in Life Care Planning and Disability through the Foundation for Life Care Planning Research, University based research projects or in any fashion that is useful to the Life Care Planning Community.

5) Graduate Student Dissertation/Thesis of the Year Award

The student paper award is designed to encourage either post graduate students in Life Care Planning training programs or traditional BA/BS or Graduate Students in Rehabilitation programs with an interest in Life Care Planning to submit papers for review. The paper can be either a qualitative or research based project but must be within a defined topic of Life Care Planning. There is no specific word of page limit but the student is encourage to write this as if it were being submitted to the Journal of Life Care Planning Research. Seek out a copy of this Journal and read the submission criteria of contact the Foundation at flcpr2@me.com. The paper will be evaluated by the Student Paper Committee comprised of members from the Research Committee. Submission deadlines are announced each year in relation to the dates of the annual International Symposium on Life Care Planning. The winner receives travel expense and registration to the Symposium. The winning paper is presented as a poster session at the Symposium and a cash award is also presented to the Winner at that time. The current cash award is $500, (2007).
