  • 1.  Accommodations for Immunocompromised Person

    Hi all,

I've been advising a person (alcoholic, sober for 6 years) who has cirrhosis of the liver. They work for a large medical system in a non-patient contact job. The employer has advised changes are coming. The job will now involve one week per month, working on inpatient floors. They would like to avoid getting that close to patients, due to being immunocompromised because of the cirrhosis diagnosis.

The "problem" is that the person is very functional and "healthy" now. Most of the questions on the form relate to functional activities, which are not limited now. The primary concern is exposure to infections (especially Covid!). I wondered if you have seen accommodations related only to being immunocompromised.

I would be interested in hearing about your experiences.

    Thanks!

    PattyC

    Article here

    Also JAN has some suggestions

There are many individuals who have immune systems that function far differently than the norm.  Some have overactive immune systems, while others have suppressed immune systems that do not function at the level of their peers. There are many different medical conditions that result in an underactive or overactive immune system.  Several medications can trigger an immune response that can be temporary (e.g., during the use of the medication) or permanent (i.e., alter the immune system). You can locate additional information on job accommodations for suppressed immune systems from JAN's A to Z by disability and in JAN's Accommodation Strategies for Returning to the Workplace.
