Good Morning,

My name is Tara Hicks, I am a current graduate student at Winston-Salem State University, residing in Greensboro, NC.  My anticipated graduation date is set for Summer 2017 and I am posting to reach out to my fellow rehabilitation professionals who have gone into private practice.

Opening my own practice is my ultimate professional goal. However, I do not have any hands-on experience in the field as of yet which I'm hoping my practicum and internship will aid in providing needed experience. Currently, majority of my work experience deals with finances and banking. Since I do not have any experience, I'm posting to reach out and looking for any suggestions on things I need to prioritize before graduation. I'm interested in conducting community events and workshops that will help get my name and face into my community while completing my master's program. I do not have any experience in this as well but I'm looking forward to beginning my journey. I would love to speak with any professionals who have ventured into private practice with little experience such as myself and any pointers on opening a private practice.

One good way in he door to private rehabilitation in as a Community Rehabilitation Provider (CRP). CRPs provide community based rehabilitation services to individuals who are receiving services from the state vocational rehabilitation system, but may also have outside referral sources or revenue streams. Typical jobs with CRPs include vocational training programs, job placement, job coaching, and supported employment. You can find a complete list of CRPs in your state attached to this post.
