    Good afternoon -

I am a new Graduate. I earned a Masters of Science in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling.

I am currently looking for employment.  I have noticed that the job openings I have seen posted, the  employers are looking for people with experience - usually many years of experience.

My question is - How does a new graduate find a job to get experience, when there doesn't seem to be any jobs that do not require experience or additional  certifications specific to the posted job?

I am excited to use my education, experience and skills.

I would appreciate and information or advice that professionals  would care to provide.

Thank you again for your time and consideration to this request.

    Sincerely,

    Hi Kitty,

I graduated in December with my Master's of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling, CRC. When I was still in school I found an internship at a non-profit by my house and I worked there for free for about 8 months. I started applying to jobs a few months before I was set to graduate and used my experience from my intership in my cover letter and interview to really sell my skills for the job. They asked for 2-3 years of experience, but I had less than a year of experience. I also had my manager at my internship write me a letter of recommendation which really helped to secure the position. Go ahead and apply for the jobs even if you do not have experience and volunteer womewhere to get experience until you find a job. I hope that helps!

    Kitty,
I'm glad that you asked this question as I am sure that it is on the minds of many new graduates.  I think that your approach might benefit from some of what we might tell our clients when they are lookingfor work.
    1. Apply, apply apply.  Don't just contact the agencies and companies that are running ads, but cold call companies that may not be advertising at this time.
    2. Network as much as you can.  Are you looking for work in Wisconsin?  Contact the president of IARP-Wisconsin and see if there are any local programs coming up where you can meet your peers.  Or simply go to the IARP membership directory and call some of your chapter's officers to begin the process of finding out who to call.
    3. Don't be dissuaded by ads looking for experienced counselors.  Perhaps the employer in a perfect world is hoping for that type of candidate, but might feel that you are just the person they are looking for.  Contact the employer in writing, and if you know who they are and where they are, contact them by phone as well.
Remember, it's a numbers game.  Contact as many employers as you can and you will find a job.  No doubt it is tough out there, but jobs are available for the aggressive (but polite) applicant.
Thanks for reaching out to us.  I hope to meet you at an IARP conference some time and will look forward to hearing about your job!

    Kitty,

I would go ahead and apply to everything that comes your way.  My former supervisor once told me that it never hurt to interview plus the more you interview, the easier the answers will come.  Sometimes prior experience will help along with showing that you have a Master's.   Another thought is have you tried the smaller organizations that have work programs onsite or send consumers out with job coaches?  That's another option.  Goodwill Services in Rochester, MN is expanding their service programs and is currently hiring.     Good luck,  I'll be looking next Spring.  I have one more year left of my Master's program.
