IARP ANNUAL AWARDS PRESENTED AT ANNUAL MEETING

IARP announced its principal awards winners at the association’s 2015 annual meeting in New Orleans last weekend. The awards highlight the IARP member who has made lifetime contributions benefiting the total rehabilitation community. Equally important are the awards for outstanding professional member, distinguished leader, and notable emerging professionals in the field.

Steven Shedlin, who has twice served as president of IARP, was honored with the IARP Lifetime Achievement Award. Steve attended the first meeting of the association over 30 years ago. The award recognizes the individual professional member who has demonstrated a history of distinguished service and life-long commitment to the rehabilitation profession. Steve has made significant and notable contributions both to the organization and the profession throughout his career. He served on the IARP Forensic Section Board for three years, including a year as section chair and as the program chair of the 2006 Forensic Conference. While president of IARP three years ago he was a strong supporter of the association’s major investment in marketing. He also criss-crossed the country to address chapter events and to personalize the role of the International president and IARP Board of Directors. The honoree will continue to serve IARP as the co-chair of the IARP Combined Conference in Pittsburgh in 2016. He is a membe of IARP Chesapeake.

Katherine Dunlap was recognized as the winner of the IARP Outstanding Leadership Award. Katherine made her first significant impact as an individual professional member on the association at the international level through her chair as the marketing committee. She led the rebranding effort of the association and the promotion of the career path service mark The Course of a Lifetime Starts with IARP. She currently is one of three IARP leaders serving as IARP’s representatives to the Rehabilitation Counseling Coalition where she is making notable contributions to the industry dialogue. Prior to her current roles, she served as chair of the IARP Council of [Chapter] Presidents and the IARP Forensic Section Board of Directors. Katherine is a member of IARP Montana.

Robert (Bob) Paré earned the IARP Outstanding Professional Member Awards through a long career devoted to IARP and other associations. He exemplifies the highest form of volunteerism both inside and outside the umbrella of IARP activities. Bob joined IARP in 1993 and served on the IARP Forensic Board as well as president of the IARP Pennsylvania in 1997-00. A prolific writer and observer Bob organized IARP's first Day of Service in New Orleans prior to the Forensic Conference in November 2010, and continued a related venture in matching seasoned IARP professionals with students for introductory mentoring of students in Puerto Rico at the 2012 and 2014 Annual Conferences. He has also made presentations at IARP and AREA conferences. In October 2014, he became one of the IARP representatives to the new Rehabilitation Counseling Coalition whose initiative and mission is, as Bob relates often, “To speak in one voice" as it attempts to shape the future of our profession in a front that never before has been similarly or successfully united. Bob is a member of IARP New Jersey.

IARP EMERGING PROFESSIONAL AWARD

The first honoree of the IARP Emerging Professional Award, Elizabeth Skyles, was selected for her leading role as a rehabilitation professional promoting the mission of IARP to a larger audience. Elizabeth has demonstrated her leadership and volunteerism both at the state chapter level for IARP Illinois and at the national level as the co-chair of the Emerging Professionals committee. Through her work on the Emerging Professionals committee, she has worked diligently to give that group a voice in IARP. She has energized her chapter and IARP leadership to understand how we can better serve our newer professional members, those transitioning to new career opportunities, and students. As a member of the Rehabilitation Counseling Coalition, Elizabeth, as president of the National Association of Service Providers in Private Rehabilitation, has gained the respect of fellow RCC members. They praise her ability to make public presentations, to brainstorm and the help write statements on behalf of the coalition. Elizabeth is a bright shining star for our profession and for promoting the mission of IARP to a larger audience. Elizabeth is a member of IARP Illinois.

PRESIDENT PRAISES PROCESS

In commenting on the awards recognition program, IARP President Rick Robinson said, “I am pleased the IARP Board of Directors approved the membership awards recognition program this summer and we were able to honor the winners in New Orleans. We have the highest regard for those who, throughout the years, have made long- term substantial contributions to the development and enhancement of the professional rehabilitation field. Today IARP formally recognizes the leadership skills, volunteer commitment, and dedication of their time and talent to the association. By also recognizing emerging professionals we signal our affirmation to revitalize, transform, and strengthen IARP through the integration of the next generation of rehabilitation professionals.”

The IARP member recognition program was developed by a special subcommittee of the IARP Membership/Marketing Committee. The subcommittee was co-chaired by Stony Landry from Louisiana and Mitch Schmidt from Pennsylvania. Others contributing to the recommendations were Barbara Harvey, Virginia; John Maier, North Carolina; Paulette Freeman, Nebraska, and Todd Harden, Texas.
