National Council on Rehabilitation Education Features IARP Speakers

IARP is proud to announce the National Council on Rehabilitation Education (NCRE) will feature six presentations by IARP leaders at its Spring Conference.  The conference will be held April 22-24, 2015, at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa in Newport Beach, California.  Complete information about registration, exhibit, and sponsorship information is attached.

PRE-CONFERENCE SESSIONS

 Dr. Scott Smith, Wednesday, April 22, 2015, 10:45-11:45

Title:    Balancing Private Practice with Higher-Educational Responsibilities:  Quality Performance across Both Initiatives

 Abstract:  Rehabilitation Counselors in academia have a unique opportunity to provide community service and apply evidence-based practice in the public medium.   Assuring quality services across both mediums require diligence and balancing of both time and additional resources.  This presentation will address responsibilities across both academic-service and private practice, while assuring high provision of services across both entities.  Format for presentation will including listing of dual responsibilities and examples of suitable and incompatible time management protocols.

Title:    Evidence-based practice and the federal evidentiary rules interface in forensic vocational rehabilitation

 Abstract: Evidence-based practice requires the application of the best available results of research in decision-making.  Rules of evidence determine whether, when, how, and for what purpose proof of a legal case may be considered before the trier of fact.  This session will consider how the requirements between the evidence in primary care practice and the evidence in a courtroom interface in forensic vocational rehabilitation individualized analyses of evaluees.

 Intended Audience: Educators, Service Providers, Masters Students, Doctoral Students

Ethics: Section F of the CRCC COE will be referenced, particularly Section F.2 and standards F.2.a., F.2.e., F.2.f., F.2.g., and F.2.h.  For the ACA COE, Section D.13. will be referenced, particularly standard E.13.1.  The presentation however, doesn't have an ethics focus.

Title:    Historical and future points of convergence between rehabilitation education and the private sector

 Abstract: The modern histories of rehabilitation education and private sector rehabilitation began about 25 years apart, mid-50s for the former and late 70s for the latter. Educators were instrumental in the growth of the private sector and many historic innovations were realized by this collaboration.  Certainly the opportunity structure for CRCs has been expanded.  This bodes well for future collaborations, more so if these are planned, deliberate, evidence based, inclusive, and transparent.

Title:    Methods & Models in Forensic Vocational Assessment

 Abstract: Vocational assessment is a keystone in vocational rehabilitation for both public and private rehabilitation settings.  Over the past 30 years, multiple evaluation methods and models have been published for forensically oriented evaluation settings.  This session will provide a high level overview of these models and the contemporary evidentiary requirements for acceptance.

Title:    Ethics in a forensic practice

 Abstract: This session will provide an overview of typical issues that arise in private and forensic rehabilitation practice.  Discussion will focus on how to deal with significant ethical issues that can arise in business situations.  A straightforward and objective ethical decision making process will be detailed and demonstrated.   

 Intended Audience: Educators, Masters students

 Ethics Component: The CRCC Code of Ethics and the ACA Code of Professional Conduct will each be used for this presentation.  Each will initially be introduced as an example of a meaningful resource to consult when striving to address ethical questions in private and forensic rehabilitation practice.

 In addition, specific elements from both Codes will be presented in discussing example ethical issues.  This will especially apply as related to dealing with relationships between the forensic professional and: a.) the evaluee; b.) the customer/referral source; and c.) other professionals.  Specific ethical issues to be addressed include the appropriateness of the acceptance of referral fees and assessing conflicts of interest related to expert report recommendations. 

 The speaker will discuss relevant aspects of each Code within the context of real life business situations and decision making.

 Title:   Introduction to Life Care Planning

 Abstract: This session provides an overview of the field of life care planning, including fundamental concepts, methodology, and establishing a viable practice.  Through lecture and discussion of material created by practitioners in practice and research, the attendee will gain information to determine if this is a specialty area to be pursued.
